Psychiatric medical treatment and psychotherapeutic therapy differ in very distinct aspects. Nevertheless people often mix them up and take one for the other.

Psychiatric medical treatment usually starts with the so called "psychopathological status" - similar to internal medical status or neurological status. Its use is to reveal specific symptoms, severity of symptoms and to estimate their impact on the patients life.

Psychotherapeutic approach is different. Main focus there is the search for connections with the client's biography or explanations, why and how the present problem could evolve, not asking - primarily - for degrees of severity or extent of symptoms.

Important to know:
Psychiatrists are not always trained in psychotherapy
and
Psychotherapists are not necessarily psychiatrists.

The two professions are independent to each other. Nevertheless I am trained in both disciplines and work as psychiatrist and systemic psychotherapist along the required treatment necessary and the best way to deal with a certain problem. I am working with single clients as well as with couples and families.
As Psychiatrist my psychotherapeutic competence is always part of my considerations when working with clients. I could not do the professional work without it.
Vice versa when working primarily psychotherapeutically my medical competence gives me support and a secure standpoint. If necessary I am always able to switch to medical prescription if a problem gets suicidal or is on the brink of destructing the patients life.
Psychotherapy and psychiatry complete each other and form a quality criterion of my work.
